If monthly consumption values are missing, then Metry can estimate a value based on other existing consumption values for the meter. This is useful to be able to calculate a total consumption for many meters where there may be a few missing monthly consumption values.
How to create estimates
On the meters pages, you need to click a button to create estimates. A program will then run in the background to estimate consumption values.
If the button to create estimates is not available, contact firstname.lastname@example.org to enable the feature on your account.
How to get estimated values
As the estimated values should not be confused with actual recorded consumption values, they are stored as a separate metric.
When using the consumptions API to request values, request with an additional metric using the original metric prefixed with “estimated_” to also get estimated values.
How estimates are made
Metry uses machine learning to estimate missing consumption values. That means that there is no general rule for how each value is estimated such as using the previous year’s value for the same month.
Instead, a machine learning model has been trained using millions of consumption values from hundreds of thousands of metering points to learn patterns. This makes it able to estimate consumption even when there is not much data available for a particular meter which is not possible using many other conventional techniques for time series estimation.
